Tonale Absorptionen in der Entwicklung des Jazz – von der britischen Folk Music bis Arnold Schönberg
The structures of tonality in the western art music which were developed during the past thousand years were absorbed and consolidated in the entire development of jazz during the last hundred years. Innovative jazz-musicians studied the structures of western art music and transformed them into jazz. The tonality in jazz about 1900 essentially consists of the tonality of European folk music and the American popular music of the 19th century; the tonality of the jazz standard playing since the 1930’s and 1940’s is influenced by the chords and the chord progressions of the European baroque music (J. S. Bach etc.); modern popular music and romantic sound structures influenced the fusion music; since 1945 the progressive style has been characterized by the tonality of the musical impressionism (Claude Debussy) and expressionism (Arnold Schönberg) and finally free jazz has been influenced by the tonality of the musical avantgarde.
