Jazz-Gesang versus Klassik:

Cross-over-Training mittels Computer-Feedback

This interdisciplinary study investigates the usefulness of a computer-supported feedback in learning classical and non-classical singing at the same time (cross-over training). Based on a 4-register theory, differences in these two singing-styles are determined using an electroglottogram and measuring, in particular, the closure time of the vocal folds. These data are compared with those obtained by an invasive method, namely by videokymography. Good agreement of the results of the two methods allowed to work just with the electroglottogram in the main study of this paper: Six female singers should try to switch between a classical and non-classical singing style. Guided by the visualization on the computer screen, most of the singers were able to change the mode of singing within a short period of time – the characterization being a distinct different closing coefficient of approximately 30% in the classical case and 50% for the non-classical mode.
