Amateurmusiker

– musikalische Präferenzen in Relation zu genrespezifischer Ensemblepraxis

The study examines the connection between ensemble practise of a specific genre and music preferences of amateur musicians. The amateurs of the sample who are between 15 and 35 years old, play in different ensemble groups (chamber music groups, orchestras, brass bands, trombone bands, folk music groups, Rock and Pop bands or Jazz bands) in the whole region of Hessen in Germany. By cluster analysis, ensemble practise as well as music preferences are comprised in typical groups which differ from each other in a significantly high degree. There is a high correlation between active and passive contact with music, independent of music styles. The intensity of musical practise, daily instrumental training as well as numerous rehearsals and public appearances in ensembles, they all contribute to a limited preference spectrum according to genre-specific practise. According to musical biographies of amateur musicians, genre-specific ensemble practise can be assumed to be a major influence to the preference or refusal of musical genres.
