Zur Erfindung wissenschaftlicher Konzepte aus dem Geist des Problematisierens

– ein Essay zur Genesis musikwissenschaftlichen Denkens

Scientific thinking, in simplified understanding, is often considered as a way to solve obvious or “ever existing” problems. But this ignores the fact that the actual constructive component lies in the art of “problemising”, being an essential aspect of creative scientific thinking. In musicology to me Ekkehard Jost has such a creative mind, who in his thinking is giving priority to “problemising”, on the basis of his own experience and knowledge. Previous examples of such creative processes are reflected in Friedrich Nietzsche’s debate on Richard Wagner as well as in that of Hermann von Helmholtz on Johann von Goethe’s theory of colours. They confirm the cybernetic creed of Heinz von Foerster: “If you want to have answered fundamental questions, you must take care of it yourself.”
