Solistisches Improvisieren im kompositorischen Rahmen der Big Band
– Anmerkungen zu Solisten und Werken der WDR Big Band Köln
The creation of a solo improvisation undergoes, through the associated range of the composed big band arrangement, a further change. The reaction of the soloist to this fixed and conceived background leaves melodic, articulatory, and rhythmic traces in the improvisation gesture. Eight WDR big band arrangers have named concert and studio material in which they describe this correlation as a success. With the help of solos from Johnny Griffin, Gary Bartz and Art Farmer, the presented paper discusses the different processes like change of register, phrases that surpass and rhythmic sequencing that can be seen as a reaction to the big band backing.
