für symphonisches Blasorchester und Bläserensembles

The purpose of this article is to show, how composers use "Jazz" in the title of different compositions for symphonic bands or wind ensembles. It starts in the twenties, with George Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue and the Paul Whiteman Concert in the Aeolian Hall in New York on Feb. 24, 1924. Some important pieces of this genre are A Jazz Symphony by George Antheil (1925/1955), Jazz-Suite No. 1 and 2 by Dimitri Shostakowitsch (1934 and 1938), Jazz Waltz by Richard Maltby (1968), Jazz Tangents by David Ward-Steinman (1969). But there are different meanings about the idea of Jazz in these compositions, which will be discussed in this article.
