Herbie Hancock in seiner Zeit bei Miles Davis

Transkription und Analyse ausgewählter "My Funny Valentine"-Soli

Herbie Hancock was at the age of 23 when he joined the Miles Davis Ensemble, and he stayed the only pianist in this group till 1968. The recordings of the Davis Formation of this era are of highly jazz-historical value, which is doubtlessly due to the musical leadership of Davis. At the same time, the prominent role of his co-musicians, among them Hancock, is undisputed. The investigation on hand concentrates on his mode of piano playing with Miles Davis at this time, and it is mainly the first pinnacles of Hancock>s standard play that we are interested in. From this the concrete matter of the investigation is derived, namely the song My Funny Valentine, which presents an eminent example of Hancock>s stylistics during his early musical creativity. In the musical analysis, specially made transcriptions of the following My Funny Valentine recordings are used: (a) Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan: Sept 1952 (tp, bs, b), (b) Ella Fitzgerald: 30 Aug 1956 (voc), (c) Herbie Hancock within the framework of the Davis Ensemble: 12 Feb 1964, 14 July 1964 and 23 Dec 1965 (p and b in each of the recordings). As a result of the investigation, Hancock>s mode of playing can be pursued and presented very exactly. What>s more, concrete statements concerning his musical prominence within the Davis Ensemble are possible.
