Jazz im Spiegel musikpädagogischer Publikationen
The fluctuating reaction of music education theory to Afro-American music is determined by examining the magazine series "Musik und Bildung" ("Music and Education"). This work is the attempt to provide a historically orientated research of music reception. It also attempts to clearly reveal cultural-political tendencies concerning didactic viewpoints of Afro-American music, which, up until now, appear to have been partially unreflected.
It is revealed, that music education's understanding of a culture based on folk song, and the ideologically elevated "Kunst-Musik", do not possess appropriate criteria for application to the phenomenon of Jazz. This assertion can only be made with reference to the observed time period. In the near future, diachronologically oriented work will have to provide a more complete picture.
