Konsum und Wirkung von Rockmusik

Zur Sozialpsychologie der Rockszene

The consumption of music, especially of popular music, has developed in the last twenty years into the favorite pastime of young people. The type of effects and emotional experience which result from this often time-consuming consumption of music, is answered only incompletely by theoretical and practical analysis, because the effects and emotional experience are determined by many nonmusical variables.

The majority of young people credit rock music above all, with one effect: they regard it as a welcome diversion from everyday problems, however, they have hardly any of the "in fashion" problems with alcohol and drugs, which the allegedly serious media often want to hang on them. Young people have aggravations in their professions, school and family, boredom, worries about the future and communication problems of every nature. Supposedly, these problens should be pushed aside by the music. But the therapeutical effect of rock music can, at most, be regarded as a cure for the symptoms the problems' origins are not done away with via this means.
