Anmerkungen zur musikalischen Analyse von Jazz und Rock
The questions in the analysis of this music differ from those in the analysis of the so- called E-music in a two fold manner: on the one hand they are the result of the musical material, on the other hand, a result of the social context of this music. The analysis of a "work" from the realm of E-music is fixed through musical notation, and above all concentrates on melodic, harmonic rhythmical and tectonic components. In Jazz and Pop, however, only music can be subject to analysis which include significant components for Jazz: sound and expression. Even by the same parameters, as for example in harmony, different analytic methods must be applied, because different cultural areas create different types of musical conceptions. The difficulty in a literary analysis presents itself in the problem of objectivity. There are two poles to be considered: a consideration of the work itself, and descriptions of the Pop scene, with its sensational anecdotes. These two extreme poles are fundamental to the discussion. The references to categorizations which are not objectively founded such as "U- and E-music", is problematic but should not be excluded. Because the effect of a work is not always the same as that which the artist consciously intended, the danger of a mis-interpretation is always present. This especially appears to be the case when the critic tries to find some meaningful sense in every detail. Special care and attention is recommended if one attempts to draw analogies between sociological and ethnological processes on the one hand, and corresponding changes in the musical material, on the other hand.
