Dr. Dietrich Schulz-Koehn Archive

The stock of the media collection and the library of the Institute for Jazz Research has been outstandingly enlarged through the donation of Dr. Dietrich Schulz-Koehn.

Professor Dr. Dietrich Schulz-Koehn (1912–1999) designed numerous jazz programmes, beside others with the West-German Radio Station (WDR) in Cologne. Actively working with the Deutsche Grammophon since 1949, he was also a lecturer of jazz music at the Cologne Musical University. What’s more, he was one of the founding members of the International Society for Jazz Research at the First Jazz Scientific Congress in Graz in 1969.

For his great merits about Jazz, Dr. Schulz-Koehn was honoured several times. He became the first Honorary Member of the International Society for Jazz Research in 1982, he was also awarded the Verdienstorden Erster Klasse (First-Class Medal of Merits) of the German Federal Republic in 1985 as well as the Goldene Ehrenzeichen (Golden Medal of Merits) of Styria in 1987. In 1990 he was appointed a honorary Professor at the Berlin University of Arts.
