Franz KERSCHBAUMER, O.Univ.Prof. Dr.

Dr. phil., full university professor, born in 1947, studied from 1964–1972 at the University of Music And Dramatic Arts in Graz in the main subjects Trumpet ("classical" and jazz) and Double Bass. In 1977 he was conferred a degree of Dr. phil. in the main subject Musicology. He has been Assistent Lecturer since 1970, from 1977 to 1988 he was University Assistent at the Institute for Jazz Research. In 1988 he was appointed full professor of Popular Music and jazz-idiomatic musical practice at the University of Music And Dramatic Arts in Graz, where he also has been Head of the Institute for Jazz Research. Since 1989 he has been lecturer of jazz at the Institute of Musicology at Vienna University. His publishing activities and his emphasis in research are concerned with the themes Improvisation Analysis (Miles Davis, Booker Little) as well as Jazz History and Popular Music. Since 1976 he has been co-editor of the series Jazzforschung / Jazz Research and Beiträge zur Jazzforschung / Studies in Jazz Research. These series are edited in cooperation with the International Society for Jazz Research, whose President Dr. Kerschbaumer is. At present, the practical part of his musical activities deals with the direction of the Dixieland All Stars Graz and the Miles Davis Project.
